Speaker Shares Story Of Loss Due To Drunk Driving

Mark Sterner, a public speaker, works through CAMPUSPEAK to tour colleges and high schools to share the story of the worst night of his life, beginning his speech with the question, “How many people killed their three best friends while drunk driving?”

Only months before graduating, Sterner and four friends were celebrating on their last night of spring break.  Sterner, the least drunk, would drive them all back from their hotel.  Only two miles from their destination, they went off the road.  All were thrown from the car, two dying on impact, one crushed by the car, and two of them surviving, one of which was Sterner.

Sterner was taken to the hospital and charged with three counts of manslaughter, facing a maximum sentence of 45 years.  The other survivor has not spoken to Sterner since the accident.

Says Sterner, “I think back to how much fun that night was and how the antics made me laugh.  Those stories don’t make me laugh anymore.”
