Two people are dead from a motor vehicle accident caused by
Mauricio Velasquez, 32, of Springfield, Mass., who is suspected of being
intoxicated at the time.
Velasquez lost control of the van he was driving and
struck the vehicle of Charles Hoffman, 71, head-on. Hoffman was killed in the
accident along with Velasquez’ 3-year-old daughter, who was not restrained or
in a car seat at the time of the crash. She was found on the floor of the
vehicle not breathing. Two others were injured in the accident; 25-year-old
Milder Vasquez and Hoffman’s wife Janice, 69. Mauricio Velasquez was arraigned
on Dec. 9 in Northampton District Court and denied all charges against him.
Until his next court appearance on Feb. 4, he is being held on $100,000 cash
bail.
