What
constitutes drunk driving is up for debate again after the Chairwoman of the
National Transportation Safety Board, Deborah Hersman made a recommendation to
lower the legal limit of intoxication to a blood-alcohol content of 0.05 from
0.08.
Researcher Timothy Brown has been researching the precise difference in
driving performance with no alcohol and with a blood-alcohol level of 0.05,
hoping to shed some light on the debate. Although research suggests that
lowering the legal limit of intoxication could save 500 to 1,000 lives per
year, man safe-driving advocates have noticeably silent. Many believe police
will have a hard time enforcing the lower limit.
