Reformed Sobriety Laws Gain Traction in Texas

Two new bills mandating strict vehicle sobriety laws are pushing for passage in the state with the highest drunk driving related deaths. If passed, statewide sobriety checkpoints will be set up, and first offenders will have a mandatory vehicle sobriety locking system installed in their car. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is pushing support for each bill and advocating attitude changes about lenient first offensive charges. With the already high number of drunk driving deaths in Texas, MADD believes reform is imperative to change what they find to be a “social acceptance” of this crime. Too frequently, individuals are not held entirely accountable for their actions and too easily forgiven in the aftermath. Reform of this kind is essential to reduce future impaired driving deaths across the nation.
