As part of Tie One On, who is
celebrating its 28th anniversary, vehicles in the midlands across
the country will be decorated with red ribbons in order to raise awareness
against drunk driving.
South Carolina had the seventh
highest number of deaths caused by drunken drivers among the U.S. in 2012,
according to Steven Burritt, MADD program director. Volunteers will be
distributing red ribbons at local businesses beginning this week and asking motorists
to attach the ribbons to their vehicles in an effort to raise awareness of the
need to avoid driving under the influence. The campaign was launched in order
to raise awareness right before the holiday season.
Captain Trey Stephens noted: “As
the holidays approach, the challenges for law enforcement grow.” Between
Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve in 2013, 1,091 died in drunk driving accidents.
He also specified how drivers in South Carolina can help, by reporting any
suspicious drivers to authorities, in order to minimize any accidents or
fatalities.
