A study published in the Journal of Studies on
Alcohol and Drugs this month claims that the number of deaths from drunk
driving in the U.S. are under-reported. When researchers in the study compared
numbers from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality
Analysis Reporting System, not all of the deaths with alcohol involved were in
the data.
"Slightly more than 3 percent of death certificates listed
alcohol as a contributing cause in fatal traffic crashes. But highway data
showed that 21 percent of the people killed in those crashes were legally
drunk." The researchers also noted that there is some inconsistency with
showing alcohol on death certificates based on which state issued them; some
states are more or less likely to include it.
