The state of New York toughened its drunk driving laws after
a 32-year-old Carmen Huertas, pleaded guilty for killing an 11-year-old girl
along with injuring six other children.
Huertas lost control of her vehicle and
drove eighteen miles above speed limit with a blood alcohol level of .132 percent, going over the legal limit of
.08 percent. Huertas was driving her daughter and six of her friends to a
sleepover after she had been drinking at a family event earlier that evening.
The child, Leandra Rosado, who was killed in the accident, was a friend of
Huerta’s daughter. From this incident, the Leandra’s Law was made, which makes
it illegal for any adult under the influence, to drive around with children.
