A newly-approved bill by the Senate Judiciary
Committee in New Jersey will address first-time drunk driving offenders to opt
out of losing their license. In place of license suspension, the offender has
the option to instead have an ignition interlocking device installed in their
vehicle.
This device determines the blood alcohol level of the driver and if it
is too much to drive, the car cannot be started. This practice is mandatory for
second-time offenders, but it is the first time offenders with only one offense
can use the device. The law prior to this new bill made it mandatory for
first-time offenders to have their license suspended for at least three months.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is supporting this new bill, saying that data
shows the devices will reduce drunk driving deaths.
