The family of West Virginian 17-year-old James Fletcher
asked the judge for justice in the sentencing of Merle Stanley Johnson, who was
driving under the influence when he killed the teen in 2012.
James’ mother and
sister spoke at the sentencing, expressing the grief and sadness they still
feel over their loss. Sixty-six-year-old Johnson was found guilty of driving
under the influence in November 2013 and was sentenced to 2 to 10 years in
prison for the death of Fletcher. The accident that killed the teen also
severely injured Johnson, who apologized to Fletcher’s family at the sentencing
and stated that he thinks about the victim every day.
