This week, an aggressive new bill was being considered in New Mexico that would forbid many people convicted of drunken driving from buying alcohol anywhere — stores, restaurants or bars. If it passes, it would be among the most restrictive drunken-driving laws in the nation. New Mexico has had one of the highest rates of alcohol-related traffic deaths in the nation. Due to a horrific recent accident lawmakers are trying to come up with a good solution to make their roads safer from drunk drivers.
“We have a terrible problem in New Mexico,” Mr. Egolf said, “and what we are trying to do is come at it from the other side, not just the punitive, incarceration and interlock side.” Eliminating the source or "cutting the head off the snake could save many lives in the fight against drunk driving. New Mexico could make a huge leap in combating drunk driving, but it could also cause a huge uproar among people who have been convicted before but have been clean, or safely drink without driving.
