Tough drunk driving laws have cut the number of alcohol related accidents in half since 1982, the year they started to keep records on DUI's. The Century Council is a non-profit organization that is funded by distillers that help to develop programs and policies to fight drunk driving. They work with police, public officials, parents, teachers and students to educate and bring about positive changes and save lives while tracking drunk driving statistics. Since 1982 fatalities from drunk driving have fallen 52% and fatalities for underage drunk driving have fallen 76% according to research.
The Century Council has lent it's support to several anti-drunk driving programs and policies such as license revocation, tougher penalties for breathalyzer refusal and under age drinking. They also fight to keep the legal blood-alcohol level at 0.08 instead of raising it to the recently discussed .10 that would most likely result in more DUI related fatalities.
On the other hand, as tough as DUI laws are, there are still some who seem to get away with it for an incredibly long time. A perfect example is the man in St.Louis who is facing his seventh DUI charge. His blood alcohol level was 0.215. Why the hell hasn't his license been revoked yet? His rap sheet dates from 1987 to 2013 and is considered a chronic offender. His bail was set at $50,000; somehow that seems pretty light. We need to get tougher with repeat offenders.
