National Teen Driver Safety Week is
designed to educate teenagers and reduce the rate of car accidents, which is
still the leading cause of death among teenagers.
Students were allowed to get behind
the wheel and experience what it feels like to drive while having one of their
senses impaired. They were allowed to do this with the aid of push-pedal
go-karts, while wearing special goggles that distorted their ability to see the
road ahead.
The driving was performed on campus
and not roadways. Students had to maneuver through an obstacle course made with
plastic cones and see if they could complete the course while safely avoiding
the cones.
The majority of students had a hard
time avoiding the cones, which was expected given the use of the special “Fatal
Vision” goggles that simulated what it feels like to drive while impaired.
