Did you know that drunk
driving causes roughly 1/3 of all traffic fatalities in the United States, that
on average a drunk driver will kill someone every 40 minutes, that
approximately 75% of fatal crashes between midnight and 3am involve alcohol,
and that about 75% of the people involved in fatal drunk driving accidents are
not wearing their seat belts. These statistics are scary and if you are
arrested for a DUI and are lucky enough not to be seriously injured, there are
still other penalties you have to worry about.
According to Massachusetts
state law a first offense DUI infraction has a minimum fine of $500 and a
maximum of $5,000, a maximum of 2.5 years in jail and a 180-day license
suspension. For a second offense you can receive a fine from $600 to $10,000,
between 30 days and 2.5 years in jail and get a suspended license for two
years. The third offense on is considered a felony. For the third offense you
can receive a $1,000-$15,000 fine, 150-days to five years in jail and a license
suspension for eight years. On your fourth offense you can receive a fine of
$1,500 to $25,000, one to five years in jail, and a 10-year license suspension.
On your fifth offense you can receive a $20,000 to $50,000 fine, two to five
years in jail and a lifetime license suspension. There are the penalties if you
are only pulled over and arrested. This does not include if you injure or kill
another person. Do not take the chance of receiving these penalties. Be
smart, Never Drive Drunk.
