Major League Pitcher Arrested for DUI

Professional Brewers Pitcher, Yovani Gallardo was arrested and charged with a DUI early last week. The Milwaukee ace was pulled over early Tuesday morning for suspected intoxication and tested a blood alcohol level of .22, over twice the legal limit. Despite being charged with a DUI and testing such a high percentage of intoxication, Gallardo has not received any jail time nor suspension from play. The Brewers management released a statement claiming Gallardo “is taking full accountability for his actions,” but continues to schedule him playing time. Often times, professional athletes bend the rules and are too easily forgiven when caught. An instance like this is a shame on the perpetrator, the Brewers Management, and the law department of that county. More must be done to stop leniency with drunk drivers.

Reformed Sobriety Laws Gain Traction in Texas

Two new bills mandating strict vehicle sobriety laws are pushing for passage in the state with the highest drunk driving related deaths. If passed, statewide sobriety checkpoints will be set up, and first offenders will have a mandatory vehicle sobriety locking system installed in their car. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is pushing support for each bill and advocating attitude changes about lenient first offensive charges. With the already high number of drunk driving deaths in Texas, MADD believes reform is imperative to change what they find to be a “social acceptance” of this crime. Too frequently, individuals are not held entirely accountable for their actions and too easily forgiven in the aftermath. Reform of this kind is essential to reduce future impaired driving deaths across the nation.

Students Produce PSA on Drunk Driving at Prom

A Public Service Announcement on a dramatized drunk driving death aims to stop students from drinking and driving during prom. In Houston County, several students produced an original short film explicitly depicting the tragic reality of a drunk driving death and the damage it can cause teens and their community. The film shows a teen leaving for prom and drinking before and while driving with her friends, and ends in a crash and the teen in a casket at a funeral. The driver in the film survives. The film illustrates an all too realistic occurrence where drunk driving not only affects the driver, but the lives of others. Too often, teens put their own lives in danger without realizing the impact their poor decisions can have. The education department in Houston County is encouraging that many schools across the country air the film with hopes that it will have the same impact it had on them.

Drunk Driver Kills 5 Family Members

The day before Easter, a Los Angeles family loses 5 members to the reckless actions of a drunk driver. In southeastern Nevada, an 18 year old impaired driver struck a van carrying 7 family members, ejecting 5 from the vehicle to their deaths. This is a tragedy all too familiar during the holidays when drunk driving, and drunk driving deaths are at a high. Law enforcement encourages all citizens to be particularly vigilant of driving conditions during the holidays and suggests all suspected impaired drivers be reported to local authorities to stop further tragedies from occurring.

Drunk Driving Simulator

Drunk driving prevention gets a technological twist in Franklin County, Virginia after the Sheriff’s department purchases a “Drunk Driving Simulator.” A golf cart modified with goggles meant to simulate impaired vision allows teens and adults to experience the adverse effects of driving under the influence in a safe and controlled environment. The simulator is meant to demonstrate the challenges associated with impaired driving in hopes that the subjects will never make the dangerous decision to drive drunk.
